About
4CG—or to use its full name, Cymdeithas Cynnal a Cefnogi Cefn Gwlad (the Society to Sustain and Support the Rural Countryside)—is a co-operative organisation established to advance community development through the regeneration of Cardigan and the surrounding area.
We were founded by a small group of local residents who strongly believed that Cardigan held immense potential to increase community cohesion, enhance our surroundings, and boost our local economy. They knew that a determined, focused organisation could make a real difference.
Enhancing the Community
Our commitment to developing the local community and economy stems from understanding the profound benefits that local trade brings. Often, large corporations siphon money out of the area, providing very little in return. While national chains and large supermarkets offer convenience, the reality is that they frequently displace independent local businesses. Their profits are sent away to distant shareholders rather than being reinvested where they are needed most.
When you shop locally, your money is reinvested time and time again. Every £1 spent locally is re-spent by the shop owners and their employees. Research shows that £100 spent in an independent local store contributes an average of £600 to the local economy. In stark contrast, that same £100 spent in a large supermarket contributes just 25p to the immediate community.
